Beauty and the Beast is one of the most beautiful tales Disney have ever told. An adaptation of a French folk tale of the same name, the 1991 version went on to become the first animated film to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. Unfortunately, The Silence Of The Lambs took the gong that year - meaning Oscar judges presumably felt Disney's work had less appeal than a liver-eating psychopath. Meh, what do they know? The world fell in love with Beauty and the Beast’s delightful characters - charming candlestick Lumière, pompous clock Cogsworth, the motherly teapot Mrs. Potts and her little son Chip, and of course, Belle and her princely Beast. Despite the original movie being released over 25 years ago, Beauty and the Beast is as popular as ever - hence the release of the 2017 live-action remake starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens.
Fact fans: did you know that Disney originally tried to adapt Beauty and the Beast way back in the 1930s and ‘50s? Or that Gaston was actually supposed to survive his fall at the end of the movie, only to be killed by wolves? Disney eventually decided against it and later used this ending for The Lion King. Beauty and the Beast’s final dancing scene was similarly second-hand - the famous dance also featured in Cinderella. Disney ran out of time during the production of Beauty and the Beast, so they simply animated Belle and her prince in place of Cinderella and Prince Charming. Of course, none of this makes a blind bit of difference to true Beauty and the Beast devotees, for whom both films hold a special place in their heart.
Tale as old as time, song as old as rhyme, it’s an EMP merch feast!
