I said maybeeeeeee, the best Oasis merch is from EMP…
Britpop kings. Northern soul. Brothers at war. Oasis’ story reads like something of a soap opera. Noel and Liam Gallagher have been the lynchpins of the band since the 1990s, two brothers from Manchester who fought – often literally – to carve a place for themselves in the industry. However, that fighting didn’t just stick to fighting against the system, and the internal sibling strife ended up derailing the band.
Let’s not leap right to the bitter end, though. After all, we’re not meant to look back in anger. The early successes of Oasis deserve to be heralded. After playing a handful of small gigs, the band cornered Alan McGee, the head of Creation Records, and forced him to listen to their demo. Impressed, he signed the band and helped them prepare what would become their debut album – an album that would land in the history books. As they were planning their ascent, Oasis released their first single ‘Supersonic.’ Fairly successful, it would pale in comparison to what was to come. . Released a month before their debut album's arrival, the soaring ballad ‘Live Forever’ became a major hit in England and helped make Definitely Maybe the fastest-selling debut in British history. The record entered the charts at number one and eventually sold over seven million copies.
Oasis had found their niche – and they were to follow up with some of the biggest anthems British musicians had released since the Beatles. Songs like ‘Wonderwall’, ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’ and ‘Champagne Supernova.’ Dominating in countries across the globe, Oasis took the sound of Manchester and conquered… but they could never really conquer their own inner tensions. Even during the successful run of singles and albums, Noel and Liam would take turns temporarily quitting or refuse to do interviews together. It led to cancelled tours, album delays and, eventually, the band dissolved.
Stop crying your heart out, though. The band might be on hiatus (temporary or permanent, who knows), but we’ve got plenty of Oasis merch to keep the spirit alive here.
