Post Punk

Probably the best-known representative of post-punk is Siouxsie Sioux with her band "Siouxsie and the Banshees". Incidentally, in the early days she was part of the "Bromley Contingent", which paid homage to the Sex Pistols. Sid Vicious, the bassist of the Sex Pistols, was a band member of the "Banshees" at the beginning. The closeness between punk and post-punk can therefore already be seen in the musicians themselves, even if influences from artists far removed from punk such as David Bowie or The Velvet Underground also flowed in. Other representatives of the post-punk genre were Joy Division, The Birthday Party with singer Nick Cave, And Also The Trees or Bauhaus. The designation of the music pigeonhole was inaccurate. Cow-punk, goth-punk, punk-rock, new-wave, no-wave - somehow it all flowed together.

Characteristic of post-punk was the mixture of punk music and new instruments such as synthesizers. In addition, other genres were incorporated into the old familiar punk sounds, funk, rock, blues and anything that broke with the old pattern. The lyrics were no longer aggressive, but more playful and were delivered in a more melodic way. Visually, however, the post-punk bands had little in common with their punk forebears. The outfits were darker, the styling not garish and torn, but almost avant-garde, in any case darkly elegant and creative.
