by Markus Eck (10.04.2008) The Swedish visionary, Mikael Åkerfeldt has made a fascinating musical journey with his band, Opeth, over the years, and also "Watershed" features again finest, Progressive Dark Metal. Seven extraordinary compositions were created, seven pieces of sonic art that couldn’t be more varied and yet, at the same time be closer to each other. Grand master Åkerfeldt presents his talent for obscure lines of tension with an absolutely secure sense for homogeneity. Yet, in contrast to the last album, also the heavy side found its way back on "Watershed". Many extreme passages can be found on the album. Opeth enchant the listener with a balanced mixture of all kind of diffuse, beautiful, psychedelic sounds, dreamy passages and after all, pure Metal, too. So it’s not only when slow, clear vocal lines lighten the sonic atmosphere with graceful intelligence that inevitable, timelessly beautiful moments of pleasure can occur.
