by Jürgen Tschamler (29.09.2011) The album title is a hint: this is the thirteenth Megadeth album. Apart from Dave Mustaine, the only original member aboard is bass player Dave Ellefson. "Endgame“ was a step in the right direction towards the top ranks again, and "Th1rt3en“ is the next one, leaving nothing to be desired. Mustaine wields his weapon with the trademark characteristic aggressiveness and clout, the riffs hit effectively like fusillades. And the redhead doesn’t curb his anger when it comes to the vocal parts either. The rhythm section provides just the perfect juggernaut of a sound for the speedy riffs, turning tracks like "Whose life (is it anyways?)", "Fast lane“, or "13“ into top-notch ear candy. Mustaine can also indulge in his penchant for intricate song structures, and is supported by brilliant speed wiz Chris Broderick (ex-Jag Panzer) who really struts his stuff. "Th1rt3en“ is a classy, brutal statement by Megadeth - you’ll almost forget the number of mediocre outputs they released before this one. Mustaine’s ego is in mint condition again, as proven on this wonderful chunk of great Thrash Metal with its distinctive killer riffs. "Th1rt3en“ is a suckerpunch in the face of all sceptics - Megadeth haven’t sounded that aggressive and angry for a long time!
