by Ralf Koch (13.06.2008) What is waiting for you on the debut album of Magician? Well, the Brazilians offer a nice melee of bombasto power metal (without the sometimes prevalent staginess) and terrific guitar soli. The five-piece from Porto Alegre started jamming in 2000 - since then, they mix riffs with melodies, a break here and there adds complexity (you 'bangers won't get disappointed, though), and Dan Rubin's powerful heroic voice is spiced up by some hefty screams he lets off occasionally - top-notch stuff! Being well-known in Brazil, the boys could gather support slots for Helloween (among others) which must have lead to some handy contacts: the album has been mixed and mastered by Dirk SchlΓ€chter, Kai Hansen and Arne Lakenmacher in the High Gain Studios in Hamburg. Their record label draws a parallel to early Angra (they're also from Brazil) - and they're right: Magician really are able to pick up the loose ends - this debut is a nice beginning.
