Stan Lee and Marvel Comics brought Peter Parker to life in 1962 in issue 15 of Amazing Fantasy. An immediate hit, The Amazing Spider-Man launched not long afterwards and immediately became one of Marvel’s top sellers. We all know the story by now - an orphan raised in NYC by his aunt and uncle, Peter Parker is bitten by a radioactive spider and soon finds that he’s acquired some rather odd abilities, such as super-human power and flexibility, the skill to grip onto most surfaces, and shoot webs from his wrists. Peter has some fun with his new powers, but when he fails to apprehend a thief who by chance later murders his Uncle Ben, he realises that “with great power comes great responsibility”. And so Spider-Man is born – and he’s been beating bad guys such as Venom, Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, Mysterio and Vulture and fighting alongside Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk and more as part of the Avengers for over fifty years.
Spider-Man’s story has been retold over and over again both in comic books (there have been several versions of the series), on the big screen (we’re now on our second reboot in less than a decade) and on the small screen (the franchise has had two live-action and nine animated TV series), yet fans still can’t get enough of their friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man. He’s also taken to the live stage in Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, a 2010 musical featuring tunes from U2’s Bono and the Edge.
