13.Smells Like Rock 'n' Roll
by Benedikt Niederschmid (19.01.2007) The fact sheet of the Emil Bulls is nice reading. But the Bavarians never lacked in charms. Yet, one has to be careful not to be caught in the sweet promotional gibberish. The surprise remains. The Emil Bulls made an acoustic album; completely without electricity, Tinnitus-friendly and without a moshpit. And without invitation of MTV's. "The life acoustic" is a compilation of the most important songs of the Bulls-oeuvre, performed unplugged and without the band-typical pathos. Which leads us to the question: do the songs work without heaviness? An uncertainty that is soon wiped away when even the old rockers, like "Smells like Rock'n'Roll" or "Style school" are greatly put into a new sound. That sounds playful and relaxed - and like a wish come true. The band won't come any further with this album - too few people have waited for this. But devoted fans will love it anyway!
