Dexter Holland and his comrads haven't changes a lot since the release of their breakthrough album "Smash" (1994). Why should they? Songs like "(Can't get my) Head around you" or "Lightning rod" immediately get a hook in you. Second chorus latest and you sing along. Nevertheless, there's no boredom with this album: the Californians vary their simple riffs in speed as well as in the arrangements. Cleverly woven in ska elements go through "The worst hangover ever", "Hit that" comes along with electronic and funk elements, while "Spare me the details" claims to be the most relaxed pop rock song of the month. "Splinter" is a typical Offspring album that should delight every fan of the quartet -no more, no less. The limited edition contains a bonus DVD with the video clip for the heavy "Da hui", a making of as well as interviews with the musicians. (Oliver Kube - 04/02)
