Nach ihrer letzten Tour wollten sich Sänger James Hetfield, Gitarrist Kirk Hammett, Drummer Lars Ulrich und Bassist Jason Newsted für die Aufnahmen zu einem neuen Album im Studio treffen. Dann erschütterte die Nachricht von Newsteds Ausstieg aus der Band die Musikwelt. Die restlichen drei Bandmitglieder versuchten einen Neuanfang: Sie mieteten sich auf einem alten Militärgelände ein, um erstmals ein Album zu produzieren, an dem jeder gleichermaßen beteiligt sein würde - mit Hilfe eines Psychologen, der dafür sorgen sollte, die Probleme zu lösen, die sich innerhalb der Band aufgestaut hatten. Die Filmemacher Joe Berlinger und Bruce Sinofsky begleiteten den Selbstfindungsprozess der Band Metallica nach dem überraschenden Ausstieg ihres Bassisten fast drei Jahre lang auf Schritt und Tritt. Aus über 1200 Stunden Film bastelten sie aus Interviews und Konzertmitschnitten sowie Aufnahmen, die den Alltag der völlig zerstrittenen Band bis zur Fertigstellung ihres letzten Albums "St. Anger" zeigen, eine Dokumentation, die einen ungeschönten und spannenden Blick auf das soziale Gefüge einer der erfolgreichsten Rockbands der Gegenwart erlaubt.
