The last recordings from Warrel Dane (Sanctuary, Nevermore) come out on 26 October 2018 under the title ‘Shadow Work’, constituting his second and, sadly, final solo album. Warrel, the talented singer/songwriter, passed away while recording in São Paulo on 13 December 2017, leaving behind an unfillable void in his place. The instrumentals for ‘Shadow Work’ were fully completed, comprising 80 minutes of play time. It was possible to add Warrel’s vocals to half of this, editing in recordings from pre-production and studio sessions. The passion and attention to detail with which his Brazilian collaborators, his label and artist Travis Smith completed the album in accordance with Warrel’s vision should be taken as a profound appraisal of his creation. The 12-page LP booklet provides reconstructed lyrics taken from notebooks, artwork for each song based on Warrel’s concepts, liner notes and poignant photos. Musically, you can expect hard, technical metal that is hymnal (‘As Fast as the Others’), balladic (‘Rain’) and revolutionary (‘Mother is the Word for God’), combined with dark, personal lyrics.
