by Oliver Kube (14.07.2008) Together with his singing companion Candice Night, guitar maven Ritchie Blackmore who has gained world-wide fame with Deep Purple and Rainbow, pays tribute to renaissance since 1997 by acting as a troubadour. And since "Fires at midnight" (2001), you can find more and more classical Rock elements - which is also true for the latest and seventh album of this project. Granted, a lot of archaic instruments are used, but the pulsating opener, the epos "Locked within the crystal ball" is clearly dominated by an electric guitar and straight drums. Of course, youβll find "true" Folklore songs like "Toast to tomorrow" or the wonderful instrumental "Prince waldeckβs galliard", which complete "Secret voyage", and make it one good opus of that special genre. But Blackmoreβs past shows through very clearly now, for example on the Elvis cover "Canβt help falling in love" or the stomper "The circle". Hey, maybe heβll give us some Hardrock again after all these years!?
