    Seasons of tragedy

by Matthias Mader (04.01.2008) After the splendid debut, "Uncreation", the expectations for Benedictum's sophomore, "Seasons of tragedy", were quite high. Yet, who would have thought that the Californians around front lady, Veronica Freeman, indeed manage to breathe new life into the traditional Heavy Metal-genre? The intro, "Dawn of seasons" with its mystical keyboard carpet and Oriental, acoustic guitars may still lead the surprised listener on the wrong trails a bit but already with the following "Shell shock", the Metal thunder finally breaks loose. Benedictum offer catchy midtempo Metal with great guitars, great hookline-refrains and transparent song structures. Singer Veronica Freeman convinces with her often extremely smokey voice (the exception is the melodic "Steel rain"), that even is the topping on the ice for the Accept-classic, "Balls to the wall" (only the female interpretation of Dirkschneider's lyrics may cause some smiles). The limited digipak-edition of the album features another, exclusive cover version.
