by Manuela Liefländer (04/02) "Scars of the crucifix" is the ninth album of the Satanic Death Metal band from Tampa, Florida. Three generations of bands have been influenced by Glen Benton and his fellows. Though there may have been some weaker spots since the third album "Once upon a cross" the dark guys are still strong after 18 years. "Scars of the crucifix" can be called Deicide's most aggressive album in terms of vocals and speed. Minimal and theatrical, at the same time fat and rhythmic riffs culminate in one of the best Speed/Death Metal soundscapes ever. Again and again, elements of former albums are being connected to new sounds. Like in the opening title track where we find a modified verse rhythm of "Trifixion", while the third track "Conquered by sodom" is a counterpart of the vocals on "Dead by dawn" including some galloping interludes. It will be difficult to throw Deicide off their Death Metal throne.
