by Alexander Ertner (08/01) Jesus! Germany's Medieval Rock-formation #1 is back with a really great album! They have become more modern! More matured. Just better! Were the last two albums still playgrounds for the experiment "Medieval meets Rock/Metal", "Sünder ohne Zügel" now is the perfect symbiosis of these styles. Already in the opener, "Wind", "guitars-walls surround us like city-walls". And they are not let through the course of the album. Like always, the musicians feel obliged to the traditions. So once more, lyrics of "Carmina burana" via "Goethe" to Icelandic lyrics are used. Interesting is the fact that In Extremo is a band that has it's very own view upon the Medieval Ages. Because the Medieval ain't no German topic, only but a European with influences from all over the world. So the multi-language lyrics of this album is not calculated but an expression for the consciousness of the band to represent an important but dark era of our past. As long as In Extremo manage to surprise not much will change in the status of the band. But be careful: "Sünder ohne Zügel" could lead to addiction!
