by Christian Bezdekovsky (null) My anticipation could not have been bigger for the new album of the St. Barbara, California-based chaps: after I had been truly convinced by their live-qualities in April in Oberhausen, I soon got their third full-length-album. Yet, "Rock the plank" saw me back to floor again, because their pirate-punk is not everybody's cup of tea (true pirate feeling only comes up in "Weird beard" and "All American badass"). Already the opener "Shaving your life" indicates that this album is by far rockier than its redecessors - with the side-effect that the horn section is often unemployed. Unfortunately, the M.C. have taken their most uprising trademark, or with other words: the Ska-and Dixieland-portion has reduced massively, which leads to the fact that many songs are lacking something. Really convincing are beside the mentioned tracks only "Mary melody" and "Booze cruise". Result: They may have extended their style, but unfortunately on the cost of their old strengths.
