by Björn Thorsten Jaschinski (22.10.2008) The band itself produced the debut "Shades of misery" and released it in 2006 - Indie Recordings (a.o., Enslaved) re-released it last year. As before, the Norwegians juggle pure Black Metal elements and the dry bluntness of newer Satyricon. But the arrangements, based on those of the more experimental old school representatives of their genre, are still more important for their versatile and melodious sound than that. Again and again, the icebergs collapse and leave the audience on thin sheets of ice ("A breath of apocalypse"). "Endtime", a classical instrumental, splits the album in two halves. Yet, Iskald are leaning more towards Borknagar with their closeness to nature than towards Arcturus with their theatrical weirdness. In "Journey to hell", though, the clean and crystal-clear vocals remind you of ICS Vortex (alias Simen, Arcturus/Dimmu Borgir), and the glorious sounds of the continuation of "Warriors of the northern twilight" can be heard in Sweden, too. Cool? Ice-cold. Iskald!
