by Markus Wosgien (29.03.2007) Sorrow, mourning, sorrow and pain - all these emotions are again united on Virgin Black's third album, "Requiem mezzo forte". Consequently gloomy is the end result following the musical trails of Dead Can Dance, yet with the classic Rock instrumentation it is much heavier. It's like a soundtrack for a funeral or for the suffering end till the death. The seven songs are gloomy, dragging, and yet, magic and majestic waking but spring feelings. The production is very opulent and should be perfect food for every fan of dark sounds. The melodies are catchy and wonderfully melancholic and sacral. Choirs, opera-like vocals and an orchestral instrumentation appear like a unit and create something unique. Compared to bands, like Elend, Virgin Black sound more compact and not at last catchier. Especially the depressive guitar melodies make your heart bleed and completely put a spell on you.
