by Oliver Kube (30.10.2009) They had a promising start in 2001 with their major debut "Scars" and their hit single "Halo", but during the last years, the Chicago boys stagnated a bit with their mixture of Nu Metal and Post Grunge. Now they start another try with their fifth album, offering their audience stylistic variety. You get rough, groovy, chunky tracks like the opening "Tear", and aggressive "Like it is" (hovering between Disturbed and Godsmack). But the second song, "Lesser man", is considerably softer, more melodic and a perfect fit for US airplay. The title track develops from atmospheric emotional song into arena anthem, and "Surrounded" is an epitome of a classic Power ballad. So far, so good. Unfortunately, quality and originality of the compositions deteriorate in the second half of the CD. Take "Wasted", for example: a faceless thing constructed around a replaceable idea - bands like Alter Bridge probably would have given up on it already in the rehearsal room.
