    Higher Than Hope

by Jürgen Tschamler (April 2004) 11 tracks on this long awaited new Nightwish album, "Once". Already the opening riff of "Dark chest of wonders" you encounter some unusual sounds. The riff is heavy and some chords deeper than the usual Nightwish riffing. Also Tarja's vocals are rockier than before. In the further course of the song, however, it becomes a more typical Nightwish track. The most unusual song on the album is surely "Wish I had an angel" that sounds like an 90s-pop song. A heavy beat gives the rhythm and towards the end we even get a riff in Rammstein-vein. Unusually but cool done! "Creek Mary's blood" changes between typical Nightwish elements and Idian parts. Beside the Indian lyrical passages also the musical Indian passages are very interesting. "The siren" has a cool riff and begins in an Oriental vein - a song with a soundtrack flair. Really heavy is "Dead gardens" with little bombast and classical elements. What is striking in general is the heavier riffing and a deeper pitch. That makes "Once" darker and heavier than expected. "Once" is definitely a brave album for the band and will cause some discussions here and there.
