11.Mercenary man
by Riccardo Manazza (07.10.2007) With "New revelation", the avowed True-Metallers, Astral Doors release their fifth album. And that sounds fresh end edgy which may result from the extensive touring the band did in the later past. Sonically, they still pay tribute to their idols, such as Rainbow ("Pentecostal bund", "Mercenary man"), also if singer Patrik Johansson has a clearly rougher voice. But the song writing fits, the eleven songs are well done and make up a balanced album. "Waiting for the master" is a great midtempo song with good solo parts in which the two guitarists and the keyboardist do a great job. In "Planet earth" as well as the title track, "New revelation", they rock a bit faster, while "Quisling" starts with a great rhythm guitar and a fantastic atmosphere. Similarly structured is also the great "Freedom war", which is performed accordingly energetic and emotional. Very good are here the bombastic choirs. With "New revelation", Astral Doors release a great album that will hopefully bring them back on tour, soon.
