With "Mutmacher", the second album from the band, VOGELFREI broke fresh ground in 2002. They became pioneers and forerunners of the German rock movement and have gained cult status since then. The debut "Stiefeljungs" was very traditional and rather general concerning lyrically, but "Mutmacher" surprises with a very personal touch. The focus now clearly is on very thoughtful and melancholic lyrics by singer Ricky, who looks back on and re-appraises his past in jail: "You will change, not be the same / You can choose if for the better or for the worse / The homesickness and the fear you will miss something, much is going to be easier, also this burdenβ¦". So not just insincere drivel of a dreamy teenager but bitter insights from a hard youth.
