16 years after their last studio album, the new album by Loikaemie, titled 'Menschen' (People), is here! 'Buckle up! Unbelievable, but true! 'Damn it!' The words from Saxony's biggest punk festival couldn't have been any smaller. With their surprise headliner announcement, Back To Future 2019 declared: Loikaemie is back! Within five years, there was a buzz twice throughout the European Oi! and (Street) Punk scene: Heavy emotions during their farewell in 2014, followed by even greater excitement during their live comeback! And even greater with the release of 12 new songs!
Since 2019, Loikaemie has become a prominent figure, appearing high up in festival lineups and clubs, not just in Germany but also beyond. Thomas, Eddie, Paul, and Bruno were able to seamlessly continue where they left off live, but also ascend to a new level. At their concerts, people of all ages and subcultures come together, Loikaemie is a band that everyone can agree on - in the best sense. Creativity has also been reawakened: In 2022, the first new songs since 2007 were released - 'Lumpenmann' and 'Tief im Herzen' (digiheighty and as a limited 7' single), joined by 'Was Soll Die Ganze Scheisse?' and 'Lasst Uns rein'. All of these are previews of the upcoming fifth studio album 'Menschen', and can already be found on various playlists.
It's no wonder that after 16 years, expectations are huge, both for the fans and the band itself. And 'Menschen' is nothing less than a manifesto of what punk rock must sound like in 2023: Snotty and melodic, uncompromising and reflective, political and in a good mood. All twelve earworms breathe the unmistakable Loikaemie spirit, and yet 'Menschen' is a huge step forward. The modern-sounding opener 'Wenn wir alle so wΓ€ren' (If We Were All Like That) blows away everything that is currently frivolously moshing in the punk scene, from the following anthemic title track to the closing self-invitation 'Lasst uns rein' (Let Us In). The energy remains high throughout the album, while it is also more diverse than ever before in the band's history.
Street punk and rock'n'roll bangers are accompanied by reggae, spoken word, ballads, and melodies that wouldn't be out of place in pop music. Instead of blunt statements, the lyrics tell pointed stories and share well-thought-out thoughts on current miseries in the world, the scene, or in one's own mind. But there is also no shyness when it comes to catchy choruses that can now be sung together in packed concert halls. Oi!, those are explosive hits!
