"Live gothic" DVD by Therion

by Jürgen Tschamler (23.04.2008) After their successful last year’s album, "Gothic Kabbalah", Therion directly go for "Live gothic" one year later. The live album recorded in Poland impressively shows why Therion are one of the biggest acts in their genre. I cannot say to which extent the 2-live disc set differs from the dvd release but I assume that both media feature the complete show. 22 songs were played on that night. The set list may be a matter of discussion because some a "hit" is missing and fans of the older material won’t get tears of joy in their eyes, either. Yet, that is made up by the enormous playfulness of the band and the great atmosphere of the show. Of course, songs, like "To mega therion", "Nightside of eden", "Rise of sodom and gomorrah" and "Wine of aluquh" are among the highlights of the set. This is another convincing Therion live album.

The result: "Live gothic" contains (on 2 CDs) the concentrated mysticism and magic of a Therion show and also leaves nothing to be desired regarding the chosen songs. The audience in Warsaw (the recordings were done during a show there) knows its Therion and celebrates tracks like "To mega therion", "Lemuria", "The son of the sun" or "The wand of abaris" appropriately. On the tour in question, Lori Lewis, Katarina Lilja, Snowy Shaw and Mats Levén did their stints on vocals – and they did it well. In addition to the CD, you get a DVD with the Warsaw concert – as some kind of last testimony… The band will never be the same again: Petter Karlsson, Kristian and Johan Miemann have decided to leave - so "Live gothic" will bear "old" Therion in remembrance.
