by Markus Eck (03/03) This powerful and martial debut album at first seems to be more chaotic and more hectic and hysteric than Highspeed Black Metal - yet at a closer listening this all reveals to be a very highly virtuoso performance. Satyricon speed drummer, Frost adds incredible fast and killing rhythm accents like gunfire. Frost really gives everything: I can't believe that there has ever been any faster drumming than on this cd. Especially the inhuman, rough killer, "Pitch black" makes clear the pace ambitions of the Norwegian quintet. Unbelievable. The ice-cold guitar lines in similar record levels as the mention drum inferno give you a feeling to be in the middle of a thundering ice blizzard - that¦s how it has to be. The production was consciously kept rough, only underpinning that the powerful "Liberation" truly is one of the most innovative and extreme black metal releases in years.
