by Matthias Mineur (09/00) Beside Lynyrd Skynyrd and the blessed Allman Brothers Band, Molly Hatchet is the most important Southern Rock Band in music history, even when its history in contrast to that of Skynyrd with some profane records tending towards Heavy Metal hasn't been as homogeneous. But for years now, the band oils their suntanned Southern hymns with Whiskey again, cites Bluegrass, Country, Folk, Blues and Gospel, and achieves a moody whole. "Kingdom of XII" is the twelfth (that's where the title comes from) album of the band that since the beginning nineties stamped by guitarist Bobby Ingram and singer Phil McCormack. An album that takes its time and leisure to get into the deep, to vary the speed and that generously surrounds kitschy operas. Foundation still is the powerful Blues'n'Boogie-mixture reminding in times of ZZ Top, cites Johnny Zant & Greg Allman more than once and grips your feet and your heart alike. A fine record - and in comparison to Skynyrd's Christmas-album by far more energetic!! (Matthias Mineur - 11/00)
