Engst release their third studio album with ‘Irgendwas ist immer’. The fundamental sound of the 13 new songs is quite often melancholic but still pushes forward musically. There’s a wide range of drums, euphoria-soaked brass, a guitar sound that gives off a ‘hearty headlock’ vibe – and of course the voice of Matthias Engst. Trained in punk and hardcore, irked by life – but surprisingly at the same time often, well, mass-compatible. It’s not easy to describe this effect, but let’s put it this way: Matthias Engst could be the next Tim Bendzko, Mark Forster or Ben Zucker with this voice. These comparisons aren’t meant as a diss, but just that if he wanted to make smooth radio music, he’s also got the perfect mainstream voice for it. Sometimes Engst even play with just that.
