by Marcel Anders (08.01.2008) It was the internet-coup of the year, 2007: Instead of releasing their new album with a record label, Radiohead just put it on the net with the revolutionary claim, "pay-what-you-want". A request that has been followed by 1,2 million fans so far. With a minimum payment of 1 Euro they granted the band with the both biggest and quickest profit in their 15-year-career. Which resulted in Radiohead's reputation of being the grave-digger of the music industry – from which they dissociate, of course. E.g. by releasing the album as a physical medium, too, now. Fortunately! Because "In rainbows" for one is a typical Radiohead epic, for the other also a sonic revelation: ten songs between sizzling electronics, complex Progressive Rock, epic Pop and pure Avant-garde. All that is provided with cryptic lyrics, spheric sounds and all kinds of effects that after all only reveal after several, intense listening sessions. A musical surprise packet for progressed!
