The streets, once full of life, are permeated by the grotesque and dirty chaos of past times. Amidst this harsh reality, within the walls of dimly lit alleys, there is a stench of bodily fluids and rat feces.
On the subway platforms, desperate souls commit acts of violence against each other for a few measly dollars. The East River flows in a sickly green, and the tone of the city reflects the shadows cast by these illicit undertakings. In the midst of this unsettling, dark reality, a sonic landscape has emerged that captures the horror - in the form of Gravesend's second album.
The new album, 'Gowanus Death Stomp,' condenses the cruelty heard on their debut album, 'Methods of Human Disposal' from 2021, into an even darker and more primal onslaught of violence. At the intersection of criminal decay and urban unease, Gravesend utilizes various tools of the trade. Black/Death/Grind/War Metal seamlessly blend into a tar pit of biting backyard sadism and acid-tongued vocals.
Like the smell of decay wafting from a freshly recovered corpse at the harbor, the stench of decomposition emanates from every track on 'Gowanus Death Stomp.' And like NYC's underground legends, from Cro-Mags to Swans to Type O Negative, Gravesend embodies the pulse of the city, even as that pulse bleeds onto the concrete.
