Article description

The Northmen horde Ensiferum reports back on the scene with an awesome album! "From Afar" easily picks up where the band's success album "Victory Songs" left, topping the latter in each department. Brimming with anthems, battle cries, and a saturnine atmosphere, "From Afar" sounds like the soundtrack to a fictitious Northern saga.

The Longest Journey [Heathen Throne Part II]

by Anne Beierle (12.08.2009) The Norsemen are back - Ensiferum check in once again with their more than impressive brilliant new album. Titled "From afar", it follows the path chosen on "Victory songs", their last successful release, even topping it off in every regard. Laden with anthems, battle cries, and an eerie atmosphere, "From Afar" could serve as the soundtrack to a fictitious Norse saga. Ensiferum master the task to hover between Metal and Folk like no other band of their genre - without losing their directness, power and clout. An epitome of that is the middle part of "Stone cold Metal": piano, mandolin and pipes create an almost "Western movie" atmosphere. You don't believe that? Well, rest assured, it works. The great chorus part delivered by several songstresses (!) on "Twilight tavern" also works, as well as the orchestral parts and traditional choirs in the two-part centrepiece of the album, "Heathen throne" and "The longest journey (Heathen throne part II)".
