by Matthias Mineur (04/03) The way of one of the darkest Death Metal bands from Scandinavia to a major act now swimming in Virgin Records mainstreams has taken Amorphis almost ten years. "Karelian Isthmus" from 1994 was heavy and uncompromising, spit out death metal vocals and was definitely not suitable for the common rock music fan. With "Far From The Sun" the case is reversed. Deeply melodic vocals with anthemnic qualities, easily accessible chords and mid-stream heaviness - that's how the Finns sound like in 2003. Yet, still one cannot claim sell-out of the old ideals alone because of the fact that this progression has come slowly over the years, culminating in the 1999-album, "Tuonela". "Far From The Sun" follows this path, in the opener "Days Of Your Beliefs" sometimes reminds me of Gary Moore's "Over The Hills And Far Away" and all through the album could be called pure rock music with sme folk elements.
