Since their formation in 2014, the Ukrainian blackened death/doom metal visionaries, 1914, have been exploring the horrors of the First World War in their songs. This relentless journey through history began with their debut album, 'Eschatology of War' (2015), and culminated in the critically acclaimed 'Where Fear and Weapons Meet' (2021). After 'Eschatology of War' was digiheighty re-released in 2021 through Napalm Records, several new physical formats will finally be available on August 4, 2023.

With the madness of war in mind, 'Eschatology of War' delves into various events from the past, such as the battles of Gallipoli and Verdun, the gas attack at Ypres, the Brusilov Offensive, the Christmas Truce, and the bombing of London, to name just a few selected examples. It begins with the authentic intro, 'War In,' that delivers the melodies of an old military march played for the men heading off to war. 'Frozen in Trenches (Christmas Truce)' initially portrays a harmonious idyll to the melody of the popular Christmas classic, 'Silent Night,' but soon the gunfire breaks in, accompanied by harsh vocals that mercilessly convey nothing but death and decay. The longest song on the album, 'Ottoman Rise,' further intensifies the atmosphere with heavy riffs, thundering black metal drumming, and deep cries of despair. Without any compromises, 1914 combines death and black metal of the old school into a sinister alliance. Infused with a touch of sludge and doom, this extraordinary masterpiece cannot be pigeonholed. With their works, 1914 create their own highly authentic and remarkable sound world and pay homage to all those who fell in the First World War. Alongside intense lyrics and a unique visual experience, they transport listeners back to a cruel time in human history while simultaneously reflecting the present. 1914 encourage confronting our own terrible past that should never be forgotten, but also emphasize the importance of not losing sight of the here and now.
