by Björn Thorsten Jaschinski (04.10.2006) This candidate for the top 3 of the best U.S Speed Metal records shows the creative potential that had always been suppressed in Jason Newsted over the years. The "Metalshock" demo and sampler contributions till 1986 had always hinted on this genre highlight also containing the instrumental "Flotzilla", formerly only available on tape. Flotsam And Jetsam could live up to Exodus and Metallica, but was more melodic by the steady leads and Erik A.K.'s high vocals. Newsted stamped them as the main composer, lyricist and with his bass playing - not only in the intro of "Hammerhead". Inspirations should have been the British marathon Metallers Raven too, which you can hear in the screams and the organised chaos in "Fade to black", a classic, like the anti-Nazi-shell, "Der FΓΌhrer" and the title track with its ballad-intro. Beside the two demo songs - e.g. "I live you die" not used until "No place for disgrace" - this package contains a remixed/remastered CD version and a DVD with live material and interviews!
