Article description

Heartthrob Ville Valo was inspired by the local Finnish, but also Greek mythology as well as Dante's "Divine Comedy" for creation of the fifth HIM opus "Dark light" released in 2005. Rather light fare in terms of music.

by Sonja Angerer (October 2005) No doubt, also this HIM album will find a lot of friends - through the radio stations all over the world rather than through the clubs. Because the Finn manages again and again to garnish his mixture of Melodic/Power Rock with some great ingredients of Gothic and a bit Metal resulting in unbelievably catchy songs. The first single, "Rip out the wings of a butterfly" seems almost Billy Idol-like positive for HIM-terms, also "Behind the crimson door" and "The face of God" are quite radio rocking. The title track is even a sugar sweet ballad. A bit edgier are "Drunk on shadows" with its Sabbath intro and the gloomy "Play dead". That the song titles and the lyrics are quite close to cliche all over the album may not be everybody's cup of tea but that can be neglected facing such pearls as the slightly folk-orientated "Under the rose" with its fantastic Gary Moore inspired hookline and the smooth, violin-sweetened "Killing the loneliness".
