by Andreas Reissnauer (03/02) The predecessor, "At the heart of winter", is one of the best Black Metal records ever for me and one of the absolute highlights of the last year. Could Immortal keep the quality level of that album? To be honest: not really, at least not in my opinion. Because Immortal have not continued the path chosen by going for Black Metal in Bathory-vein, full of bombast and coldness, but have gone one step further, into the direction of "Blizzard beasts". That means that the songs are harder again, packed with Trash-riffs and hit you like a hammer. Don't misread me, "Damned in black" is better than 90% of all other releases. The songs are perfectly arranged and produced and spread a mysterious atmosphere as well as aggression. I am even sure that the Norwegians will appeal to more fans than with "At the heart of winter", only I would have liked if they had become more melodic and bombastic. But that doesn't change the class of "Damned in black".
