by Adam Weishaupt (12.08.2009) When Suffocation released their first EP "Human waste" and their killer debut "Effigy of the forgotten" at the beginning of the 90s, the New Yorkers were considered one of the most extreme and brutal bands on this planet. At the end of the 90s, they called it quits and only 2004, they were back on the scene with great "Souls to deny". "Blood oath" is the sixth album by front growl Frank Millen (who's at it with all his might - you wouldn't think that it's 20 years later now!) and his boys - and it's like a time travel to the hey-day of Death Metal in the early 90s, including the feeling, the production, and the song structures. Obscure and weird riffing rules, technical versatility unto and beyond all limits is what counts, resulting in neck wreckers such as "Dismal dream" (reminding me slightly of Morbid Angel), bizarre "Mental hemorrhage" or the awesome title track "Blood oath".
