by Markus Wosgien (July 2004) The Finnish band, Turisas, named after an ancient god of war, with their debut album offer a true jewel for all fans of epic and bombastic metal sounds. Iof you expect clichΓ© loaded metal in Majesty vein you are soon differently: On "Battle metal", Turisas have created a world of their own and underpin that with a lot of love for details. Viking-kind of choirs mix with classic metal, driven forward by horns and accompanied by violins and pulsing rhythms. You feel like beamed into a time where you sit with Barbarians at the camp fire or fight with them in a battle. Spoken in musical terms, Finntroll meet Manowar, Einherjer and the early Mithotyn. Equally important is the influence of folk in the melodies, the choirs or the vocals perfectly adapting to the mood of the songs. "Battle metal" deserves its name and features some great musicality and creativity. There's a lot to discover and it's worth-while to spend your time with these warriros.
