by Oliver Kube (26.10.2008) Album #5 shows front man Tim McIlrath & Co. In top condition. During the opening smasher "Collapse", the boys from Chicago are at work with an energy level even Bad Religion could just offer in their best days. Can the quartet keep up that level regarding speed on all 13 tracks? No. Can they keep it up regarding intensity? Without problems. Irresistible anthems like "Long forgotten sons", "Re-education", and "Savior" take turns with more thoughtful moments à la "From heads unworthy", "Audience of one", and the acoustical "Hero of war". Rise Against have succeeded in delivering an immensely versatile, yet monolithic Punk Rock album - partially definitely due to producer Bill Stevenson: the Californian, still being the drummer of the legendary Descendents, created the crystal-clear, yet very organic and warm, modern, yet timeless sound for "Appeal to reason".
