by Yvonne Zymolka (10.07.2008) If Rock `nยด Rollโ€™s a highschool, Progressive Black Metal ร  la Ihsahn is the top degree there.... Donโ€™t think your past hero annoys you with bizarre "sophisticated" snobby stuff, though. Far from it - "Misanthrope" and "Malediction" should produce a happy grin on every Emperor fanโ€™s stoical face. But not later than the emotional acoustic part with piano and vocals in "Scarab" or the moving "Threnody" you notice that breakneck tunes and the war of riffs are not Ihsanโ€™s weapons of choice. "Unhealer", sang by Mikael ร…kerfeldt (Opeth), sets a benchmark regarding harmony and atmosphere. Comparable to light and shadow, the extremes complement one another in "AngL", generally catchier, less dissonant and less harsh than on the debut "The adversary". Itโ€™s a good mixture - now you can enjoy songs like "Elevator", you donโ€™t have to "endure" them. The sound, enriched with some synthesizer-sounds and extra noises, but not too synthetic, also pleases the ear. Ihsan indeed is a truly progressive musician who likes to experiment here and there.
