    When love and death embrace

by Lothar Landt (April 2004) The times they are a-changing. After only 7 years of existence HIM release their first best of compilation. Bands used to take more time for that... Yet musically, this collection can well be justified for it shows how many good songs HIM and Ville Valo have written in this short time. Beside 14 classics we get "And love said no" as well as the Neil Diamond-cover, "Solitary Man", two new songs that can only be called very well done. The track list ist excellent, of course, including "Right here in my arms", "Pretending" and of course, "Join me" to name but a few. Hit follows hit. And it becomes clear that the Finnish quartet perfectly knows how to create certain moods. The rhythm guitar is quite simple most of the time, but the riffs are catchy. And Mr. Valo's voice is unique, ay. Also the cover artwork is well done, so that "And love said no" is a well done package. The limited digipack features a live DVD, too, including 27 minutes of a club performance. Which is very worth seeing because small stages suit HIM perfectly! (Lothar Landt - April 2004)
