by Matthias Mineur (null) Yes, they really are America's phone masters, a band that's pumping up the volume 'til it hurts. For COC, better known as Corrosion Of Conformity, Manowar's old motto would also be true: All men play on ten. That was true in the early days of the North Carolina-based formation and that hasn't really changed even after the stylistic change from mega-heavy Hardcore to the clearly more melodic Retro Rock. While the 1994-"Deliverance" still surprised the fans and the following "Wiseblood" (1996) even meant the end of their record deal, the guys around guitar-player Woody Weatherman want to regain lost territory with "America's volume dealer". For this cause, their compositions reminding at times of Monster Magnet or Spiritual Beggars are spiced up by Southern flair, smartly steal some Faith No More-ideas ("Stare so long"), and let - in tradition of the Allman Brothers, Pride & Glory or Lynyrd Skynyrd - the Slide-guitar weep. This all is done far more consequently than before, even if they run into danger of being repudiated by their fans for good.
