Where does the T-shirt actually come from?


In the 19th century, the T-shirt was considered a vest and was only worn as such. It was not at all morally or socially accepted to wear it visibly. It's hard to imagine that the T-shirt so common and normally worn today was so frowned upon back then. What would you wear today for sports or in spring and summer if that were still the case? The word "T-shirt" first appears in old dictionaries from the 1920s, but exactly where the T-shirt itself originated is not clear. However, it is assumed that it originated among sailors. The rigging shirt looks very similar to a T-shirt, but it no longer has a button placket on the front, so it is not a shirt. Nor is it a vest, since it has short sleeves. However, it is not clear where the short sleeves come from. The origin of the T-shirt is and remains a mystery.


Despite this, the T-shirt is conquering the world


The T-shirt began its triumphal procession at the end of the 1940s and during the 1950s in America. The T-shirt became really famous when the film stars of the time, Marlon Brando and James Dean, appeared in these garments, which were still considered to be vests. The characters the two played at the time were characterised by their rebellious and erotic nature. Something that many young people wanted to emulate at the time. The success of the T-shirt was unstoppable.


The T-shirt came to Germany in the 1960s and by the 1970s it was already a fashionable item of clothing that you no longer had to be ashamed of wearing. From 1980 and the following years, the T-shirt was so commonplace that no one was surprised about wearing it anymore. In addition to men, more and more women wore the trendy garment over time. Therefore, it is not surprising that nowadays it is generally seen as unisex clothing. However, there are forms adapted to male and female bodies. T-shirts for women are more figure-hugging and have a tighter cut. Of course, as a woman you can also wear T-shirts for men.
