by Marcel Anders (04.10.2006) Singer Chino Moreno mutated for a diva. First, he made Kiss-producer Bob Ezrin go home, then he interrupted the recordings to tour with Team Sleep and furthermore took all the time in the world for the artwork and the lyrics. Which caused high production costs and a lot of trouble in the band. But such tensions can have a positive effect, too. "Saturday night wrist" is a second "White pony", and ages better than its predecessor "Deftones". Simply because the five dare risks again, leads their extremes to the limits - both on the Pop and the heavy side - and neither resiles for wild screaming and infernal kicking nor for smooth tunes, either. Iron Maiden meets Duran Duran - in one single song. Which results in a memorable change. Like in "Rats", beginning aggressively and ending soft. Or in the opener, "Hole in the earth", a bastard of New Wave and brutal Metal, in which Chino reflects the internals of the past 18 months. The album is like a roller coaster ride, a permanent up and down of euphoria and world-weariness, wild screams and emotional sensitivity. A real trip.
