by Matthias Mineur (null) S & M stands for Symphony and Metallica. So far so good. The meaning of it is that Metallica played together with the San Francisco symphonic orchestra, with each other and sometimes also against each other. The friction points that come automatically when a Metal band performs with a classical orchestra is the seasoning of this album. Conducted under the supervision of Michael Kamen (e.g. Pavarotti, Pink Floyd, Bryan Adams), the U.S. elite-rocker and a 108-headed orchestra refine a total of 19 Metallica-classics featuring with 'No Leaf Clover'and 'Human' two brandnew songs. Rough stuff becomes melodic, ascetic tunes suddenly baroque. Hammet's guitar duels with the strings, flutes, oboes and horns go together to help Metallica into new spheres. Well-known material is totally renewed by a classical touch and the two new songs are really worth listening to. Producer Bob Rock, who became a close friend of the band, combines Metalband with classical orchestra as if these two worlds would always have been one. Conclusion: S & M is for fans of the band, for people who like to get a best of program in new gowns.
