After the successful tour with Queensryche and Dream Theater across the U.S., a rendezvous of the "Who's Who in Progressive Metal", Fates Warning immediately went to work on their tenth studio album. And they seemed to have been in the right spirit. "X", the first album in four years after "Disconnected" bursts for energy and ideas. Compositions like "Left here" or "Simple human", paradoxically the most complicated and the catchiest track at the same time should satisfy old and new fans of the band alike. The heaviness was increased a bit again (tending towards "Perfect Symmetry"), still Ray Alder and Jim Matheos haven't stood still creatively. The complex structures send the listener on journeys into the unknown ("Another perfect day"). Especially great also is the drum part of Mark Zonder, one of the most underrated drummers in the genre. Fates Warning are definitely on their way back to old strengths. (Matthias Mader - September 2004)
