The times of complacent, little earwigs, such as "In too deep" or "Motivation" are over - and Sum 41 are no little boys any more. Deryck, Dave, Stevo and Con have become mature, have played in almost every club in the last two years and supported their biggest ideals from Slayer to Judas Priest. That colours off: from now on, they are adult and grown, means: heavy and brutal. Where there used to be smart pop appeal with sugary refrains and singalong vocals, you now get 30 minutes of blasting drums, sawing riffs and full speed. "The hell song", "Still waiting" and "Mr. Amsterdam" with their Speed-elements can be seen as pure Metal-epics and "A.N.I.C." is nothing but 36 seconds of noise. Yet: Sum 41 are best always if they act less wild and crazy. Like in the catchy "Over my head" ("Better off dead"), the witty "My direction" that sounds like Bad Religion or in the melodic "All messed up". But these mid-tempo tracks are in a total of 12 songs underrepresented. (Marcel Anders - 01/03)
