Swedish metal band Amaranthe is notable for having 3 lead vocalists, all of whom blend different styles of singing into a seamless harmony of kick ass sound. Now, the danger here is that you end up not really being accepted by any of the genres that they combine to make their unique sound, but for Amaranthe, that hasn’t been the case, and the main reason for that is simply that people like the way their music sounds. In terms of style, they’ve been categorised as melodic death metal, metalcore, power metal, and a dozen other things as critics grope to force them under a single label. Unlike traditional death metal, they tend to exude a positive kind of energy, and they’re not really all about darkness, hatred, and despair. Unlike metalcore, they don’t have a punk feel or element that generally typifies the genre, and unlike power metal, they feature vocals that are definitely not something you’re going to find anywhere in the genre. For that reason, we can safely say that Amaranthe is metal.
Featuring female vocalist Elize Ryd as sort of a poppy element, while having Henrik Englund Wilhemsson perform extreme metal vocals, offers a listener a broad mix of elements. Nils Molin replaced Jake E as the melodic male vocalist.
Whatever you want to call them, Amaranthe is loaded with talent, and fans have grabbed onto their genre meshing, which many might have initially seen as a gimmick. As for the band, they feel like the capacity to mesh genres like that allows them a kind of creative freedom they wouldn’t otherwise have.
