Schoolboys Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt founded their first punk band Sweet Children at the tender age of 14, little knowing that they would trigger a punk revival in the 1990s. Just one line-up change and a new name later, Green Day broke through internationally with their third album Dookie (1994), and were jointly credited with popularising and reviving mainstream interest in punk rock in the United States.

The follow-up albums Insomniac, nimrod. and Warning show the band experimenting, first in darker and heavier mode, and then with a selection of sounds from surf rock to ska to acoustic ballads. But it was the band's punk rock opera American Idiot (CD | CD & DVD digipak) that finally reignited Green Day's popularity in 2004, attracting a whole new generation of fans, and garnering two Tony Awards for a stage adaptation on Broadway.

2009's 21st Century Breakdown (CD | vinyl) built on this success and was quickly followed by a trilogy of albums in 2012. Their contribution to music was recognised in 2015, when Green Day were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in their very first year of eligibility. Now, having unleashed Revolution Radio (CD | vinyl) upon the world, Green Day are still breathing and still going as strong as ever.
