This Irish-American band, established in 1996, has certainly made itself heard over years. Their most successful track, “I’m Shipping Up To Boston”, has exploded onto the mainstream scene, thanks to its use in everything from Hollywood films and TV shows, to sporting events. Used heavily in the film Departed, the song is also used as the entrance music for the likes of the New England Patriots, the Irish national rugby team, UFC fighter Forrest Griffin.

A hard band to label, Dropkick Murphys’ music treads a fine line between various genres, including punk rock, Irish folk, rock and hardcore punk. Just as they did with “I’m Shipping Up To Boston”, the Murphys often incorporate their Irish heritage into their songs. Their fifth studio album, Blackout (CD | vinyl), contains a rock version of the well-known Irish song Fields of Athenry: a song set during Ireland’s 19th-century famine. Blackout also contains a version of the Irish classic, “Black Velvet Band”, a folk song that tells the tale of a man tricked and sent away to Australia. Since 2001, the Dropkick Murphys have further celebrated their Irish heritage by taking part in the St Patrick’s Day festival in Boston.

Currently working on a follow-up to 11 Short Stories of Pain & Glory (available from EMP on CD and vinyl) the Dropkick Murphys are hoping to release their tenth studio album in 2018. Why not grab some Dropkick Murphys merchandise to tide yourself over? Ah, go on!
