With "Blooddrunk", Children Of Bodom release their long-awaited new album on 18th April. Also if listening material had not been available, yet, singer and guitarist, Alexi Laiho, could give us some details.
"I don't like to compare my records with each other but after all, I would say that "Blooddrunk" has become much faster and heavier than "Are you dead yet?". At the same time, the new album is very musical, too, with many intricate melody lines. The songs are very catchy."
Yet, the album title sounds a bit strange.
"It can be interpreted in many ways but hasn't necessarily to do with auto-aggression, to cut oneself to see one's blood flow, etc. That had been spread a few times but is just one of many possibilities."
This time, you had much more time for the song writing than for "Are you dead yet?".
"That's right and that's also one of the reasons why the songs are so much better. For the last album, we toured almost two years and it made much more sense to us to stop and do nothing before we run into the next studio situation. So we took a break and only afterwards hid for four months for the rehearsals and composed the new album. And this way of working was absolutely correct. For "Are you dead yet", we brought ourselves into too much of a hurry."
Like on "Are you dead yet?", you worked with Mikko Karmila for the recordings. Still, you also got in contact with Peter Tägtgren (Hypocriy, Pain) who recorded the vocals and the keyboards?
"Mikko is a sound engineer, really, rather than a producer and does a good job in terms of singular sounds or the mix of an album. And, in fact, we don't need anybody who tells us how we should be playing because we are skilled musicians. Yet, that is different with the vocals. I trust Peter Tägtgren a 100% because he is a singer himself - in two completely different bands. Also in the keyboard section, he has a lot of good ideas because especially Pain deal a lot with keyboards. He is good in that."
Children Of Bodom have already been confirmed for the Gigantour in the USA.
"Yes, we are looking forward to that. Of course, this tour won't be as big as the Unholy Alliance tour with Slayer but it's still a cool trek featuring Megadeth and In Flames, too."
So, do you know when the European headliner tour will be starting?
"We don't know exactly, yet, but I assume that will be in the autumn of this year. In the summer, we will be playing some festivals, first. Children Of Bodom are in this routine of being on the road for one and a half or two years after a new album. So you'll be having many occasions to see us live."

Children Of Bodom are one of the most successful Finnish bands and, with their last album "Hatebreeder", also in Germany could reach some success. The successor, "Follow the reaper", now proves that "Hatebreeder" was not a lucky accident. Even more, in my eyes, they could improve once more, their melodic-sophisticated mix of Death, Black and traditional Metal elements on this record is configured up to the detail. Finally, too, the balance of the instruments is perfect. Where on former albums the keyboards were too dominant, the guitars now have gained in importance which, after all, sums up to a very homogeneous sound. Surely the result of the good work of producer Peter Tägtgren, who, on "Follow the reaper" did his debut for the Children.

"Our first two records were recorded in the same studio, it was time for a change,"

singer and guitarist Alexi Laiho opens up the conversation.

"Peter is a musician himself and could assist us with some fresh and new ideas. He did an excellent job, we are very content with the sound."

Musically, Alexi believes to have reached a level of development that they had wished for the debut already. I think, "Something wild" was some kind of search for the right sound that we had partly found with "Hatebreeder". But it's "Follow the reaper" that finally contains the arrangements and the melodies that we have always wished for. The album is very compact and conclusive, and of all three, surely the easiest one to get into."

The song "Everytime I die" is quite atypical for Children Of Bodom, for being a mid-tempo and almost ballade-like. Is this song a synonym for the development of the band, away from the fast speed to the more diverse sound also reaching different facets of Metal?

"We are no band that consciously defines its musical goals, the songs have to evolve naturally, and that's the way it did with "Everytime I die". I agree that this song is quite unusual but it still reveals the necessary heaviness and aggressiveness that is part of all Children Of Bodom-songs."

It's also this song that the band have done a video for. In Germany, it's very difficult to get into the MTV/VIVA-rotation, is that different in Finnland?

"Yes",

the guitar-wizard who also plays in Synergy, confirms.

"We have two channels that will broadcast our video. One even has a real Metal show twice a week."

Heavenly circumstances for German fans. In early 2001, the band plans to tour throughout Europe with the True Metal bands Primal Fear and Sacred Steel. Quite adventurous combination, isn't it?

"Not really. Last years we were on tour with different bands from the Black- and Death Metal-genre, but that's become too one-sided. I believe that Primal Fear as well as Children Of Bodom can benefit from each other because we are drawing fans from both sides. At the end of the day, it's all Metal, isn't it?"
